Mässan JFK SALE

Kosmogon ist ein schwedisches Duo, bestehend aus der klassisch ausgebildeten Pianistin Sophie Linden und Nicklas Barker, der ansonsten u.a. bei Anekdoten spielt. Das Debüt Mässan erschien im August 2021.
Für ihr Debüt haben die beiden ein stattliches Arsenal analoger Tasteninstrumente versammelt, darunter einen ARP Odyssee und ein Mellotron - ein echtes, wie auf der Bandcamp-Seite zum Album extra betont wird. Zwei Stücke von jeweils über zwanzig Minuten Dauer entstanden, als deren Inspirationsquelle Tangerine Dream und Manuel Göttsching angegeben werden.

Das Titelstück Mässan entstand in einer Hütte auf dem Land, es stellt eine Hommage an die Landschaft Schwedens dar, genauer verschiedene Phasen von Abend, Nacht und frühem Morgen. Das Stück zeigt sich klar in der Tradition früher deutscher Elektronik: Elegische bis mystische Klangschleifen wogen langsam hin und her, erzeugen den Eindruck von Weite und Verlorenheit, türmen sich zu eindrucksvollen Klanggebirgen auf. Unterlegt ist das Ganze noch mit Naturgeräuschen (Vogelgezwitscher). In der zweiten Hälfte wird es flotter, ein Sequenzerpattern kommt dazu und kräftige Orgel steht nun im Vordergrund.
Somnus ist ein weitgehend improvisiertes Stück, das anschließend editiert wurde. Komplett ohne rhythmisches Element wirkt die Musik hier noch schwebender und weltentrückter - das geht schon deutlich in Richtung der „Kosmischen Musik“. Mächtige Klangbögen wallen wie in Zeitlupe hin und her, dazu flirrt und sirrt es ein bisschen. Ein wahrer Klangmonolith ist es, der sich hier auftürmt.

Natürlich ist diese Musik alles andere als neuartig, und von Retro-Elektronik dieser oder vergleichbarer Art gab es in den letzten Jahre auch schon einiges. Dennoch ist dem Duo mit Mässan ein wunderbar stimmungsvolles Klanggemälde gelungen, das jedem Liebhaber elektronischer Musik der frühen 70er zusagen sollte. Großartig!

Instrumentalists Sophie Linder and Nicklas Barker (Anekdoten) conjure up dark hallucinogenic visions and pastoral atmospheres, using grand evocative electronic themes with spacey vintage synths, analog organs, and gentle mellotrons. Mässan is the debut album from Swedish instrumentalists Kosmogon, a compelling duo featuring classically trained pianist Sophie Linder and musical collaborator Nicklas Barker, best known as composer, guitarist, Mellotronist, and singer in the Swedish progressive rock band Anekdoten. The two have come together with an eclectic range of organic keyboards, including the Arp Odyssey, a real Mellotron, a Farfisa organ, and a Logan string machine to create a tapestry of contemplative minimalist pastoral soundscapes and hallucinogenic visions, redolent of early electronic music pioneers as Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel’s Manuel Göttsching. Two evocative pieces, Mässan (25.00) and Somnus (22.59), are spread across two vinyl sides incorporating grand themes, suited to the format.
Mässan was recorded in the autumn of 2020 in their cottage in the Swedish countryside. It‘s an homage to Sweden‘s breathtaking nature in six parts, symbolizing different phases of evening, night, and early morning in the forest. Somnus was composed as an improvisation around the same time as Mässan, using two Mellotrons and several echo units, edited and compiled at home in Stockholm in early 2021. The creative impetus came from Linder’s reintroduction into playing and composing after a break of 20 years. Inspired by electronic music innovators such as Eliane Radigue, Wendy Carlos & Ralph Lundsten, she found herself opening new doors with opportunities presented by Nicklas’s home studio set-up which ultimately led to this inspired collaboration.
