Ainavihantaa

Malady, vielleicht die besten aktuellen Fackelträger der skandinavischen Progressive Rock-Tradition veröffentlichen ihr drittes Album Ainavihantaa (Perennially Verdant). Finnland hat eine lange Tradition atmosphärischen, skurrilen Progressive Rocks, von Genre-Vorfahren wie Wigwam, Magyar und Tasavallan Presidentti bis hin zu modernen Getreuen wie Sammal und Liekki. Svart Records ist stolz, das neueste Glied in der Kette präsentieren zu können: Malady. Auch wenn die Band tief in der Retro-Ästhetik verwurzelt ist und der Aufbau des Albums mit den richtigen Sounds viel Mühe erforderte, ist die Musik nicht nur Vintage. Die Storytelling-Stimmung der mäandernden Songs wird durch eine analoge Klanglandschaft unterstützt. Maladys Musik ist gleichzeitig subtil und substanziell.

Beware of over-hype! Svart Records is promoting this as the second coming of early King Crimson. Its not that and frankly it does this band an injustice. Malady is a Finnish band who‘s stock in trade in retro-prog and damn if they don‘t do it well. The first two albums were superb and this one won‘t let you down either. I do understand what the label is saying when they reference King Crimson but this doesn‘t sound like ITCOTCK. Perhaps it draws that comparison because the band added a sax player to the lineup. It has that 70s Scandinavian sound - plenty of vintage keyboards - Hammond organ and Mellotron - beautiful liquid guitar runs. Vocals are sung in Finnish but there are long instrumental passages to keep your mind buzzing.
