Talk Talk, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Blur Veterans Unite on Debut Album By Held By Trees Titled ‘Solace’.

HELD BY TREES ist ein Instrumentalprojekt des Briten David Joseph. Es führt wohlüberlegt die Tradition des Post Rock und Post Prog fort, die ihren Ursprung in den späten TALK TALK und dem kargen Solo-Werk des Mitbegründers und künstlerischeren Kopfes von TALK TALK, Mark Hollis, sieht. David Joseph möchte sich dabei an das Vermächtnis der TALK TALK-Alben ´Spirit Of Eden´ und ´Laughing Stock´ anlehnen und bezeugt mit dem Einsatz spontaner Kompositionskraft seine Eigenständigkeit. Diese wächst sogar noch mit einigen Field Recordings, denn das HELD BY TREES Debüt möchte sich natürlich und die Musik im Einklang mit der Natur zeigen. Ebenso wie in weiten Landschaften schwingen aus den Tonfolgen Schwermut als auch Zuversicht. Neben dem passend gewählten Artwork von James Marsh sind HELD BY TREES daher auch eine Kooperation mit „Play It Green“ eingegangen, so dass für jedes verkaufte Album ein Baum gepflanzt wird.

Um mit „Solace“ nicht nur durch Feldaufnahmen in Dorset, Wiltshire und Somerset in die richtige Stimmung zu kommen, wollte David Joseph ebenso wie dereinst Mark Hollis Musiker einladen, die ihre Arrangements spontan improvisieren. Ungeniert fragte er bei denselben Musikern an, die bei den TALK TALK-Sessions teilgenommen hatten: Gitarrist Robbie McIntosh (Paul McCartney, John Mayer, THE PRETENDERS), Bassist Simon Edwards (Michael Jackson, Billy Bragg, FAIRGROUND ATTRACTION) und Schlagzeuger Martin Ditcham (Chris Rea, Nik Kershaw, THE WATERBOXS). Pianist Lawrence Pendrous und Flötist/Klarinettist Andy Panayi von Mark Hollis‘ Solo-Album sollten ebenfalls dabei sein. Selbst die beiden Herren, die für das Engineering und das Mastering der Werke zuständig waren, Phill Brown und Denis Blackham, kamen aus ihrem Ruhestand zurück, um das Album von HELD BY TREES zu mischen und mastern. Um sich auf „Solace“ außerdem mit einigen bekannteren Künstlern schmücken zu können, sagten Gaststars wie Gitarrist David Knopfler (DIRE STRAITS), Trompeter Gary Alesbrook (Noel Gallagher, KASABIAN, SUPER FURRY ANIMALS), Gitarrist Eric Bibb, Saxofonist Mike Smith (BLUR, GORILLAZ, Damon Albarn) und Gitarrist Tim Renwick (David Bowie, Eric Clapton, PINK FLOYD) ebenfalls zu.

Leichtes Klavier, Cello, Viola, Klarinette ziehen in die mehr oder minder Geräuschlosigkeit der kauzige Natur, ´Next To Silence´ ein. Percussions, Schlagzeug, Klavier, aber auch Gitarren hängen heulend ´In The Trees´. Sanft zieht das Saxofon im ´Rain After Sun´ zu den modellierenden Gitarrensaiten und Schlagzeug-Schneisen ein. Regen plätschert auf das Geäst. Akustikgitarre, Klavier und Bass wehen ´Wave Upon Wave´ durch die Lüfte. Dazu gesellt sich zum Zupfen und zum Wabern der Tasten ´An Approach´ einer bedrohlichen Schwere. Nochmals ertönt das ganze Instrumentarium samt Cello und Viola und den singenden Gitarren des ´The Tree Of Life´, nochmals im ´Mysterium´ mit allerlei Gitarrenkünstlern und nochmals mit Saxofon im Erwachen der ´The New Earth´. Erschreckend friedvoll. Erschreckend bildhübsch.

Held By Trees is a new instrumental project featuring some of the most respected musicians in the British rock fraternity. Sitting between post-rock and prog, the outfit led by David Joseph announces their debut album, ‘Solace’, which will be released in April 2022.

Boasting seven veterans of the seminal latter Talk Talk and Mark Hollis solo albums, other contributors include Tim Renwick (Guitar - Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Eric Clapton), Mike Smith (Sax - Blur, Damon Albarn, Gorillaz), David Knopfler (Guitar - Dire Straits founding member), Gary Alesbrook (Trumpet - Noel Gallagher, Kasabian, Super Furry Animals) as well as parts from blues/roots legend, Eric Bibb, Dutch rising-star, Just, and ambient composer, Unknown Replica.

After establishing themselves with pop hits such as ‘It’s My Life’ and ‘Life’s What You Make It’, Talk Talk, led by Mark Hollis and producer, Tim Friese-Greene, broke new musical ground, defining what would later be termed as ‘post-rock’ with their seminal album, ‘Spirit of Eden’ (1988). Three years later they returned with ‘Laughing Stock’. Part of that creative process was to invite musicians they respected in to improvise on their arrangements. Guitarist Robbie McIntosh (Paul McCartney, The Pretenders, John Mayer), drummer/percussionist Martin Ditcham (Chris Rea, The Waterboys, Nik Kershaw), bassist Simon Edwards (Michael Jackson, Billy Bragg, Fairground Attraction) all took part in those sessions, and have now contributed to ’Solace’. A solo record from Mark Hollis followed in 1998 which featured pianist Lawrence Pendrous, and flautist/Clarinettist Andy Panayi, both of whom have also now played for Held By Trees. Engineering all of these albums, as well as classics like John Martyn’s ‘One World’, is Phill Brown, with Denis Blackham mastering them. Phill and Denis have kindly come out of retirement to mix and master this debut album from Held By Trees.

‘Solace’ was made using a similar approach to ‘Spirit of Eden’ and ‘Laughing Stock’, with David Joseph inviting musicians to improvise over his rhythm patterns and chord progressions. Blending in his own spontaneous compositions and field recordings made in Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset, the result is a unique album that carries the DNA of the seminal Talk Talk records, and yet stands in its own identity.
‘Solace’ is a work that revels in the natural world. At once both melancholic and hopeful, the album is purposefully full of space, tension and release, and music that demands patient listening. The project celebrates nature, not just through the music and artwork (including a motif from Talk Talk’s artistic partner, James Marsh), but by partnering with Play It Green, a real tree is planted for each album sold. Held By Trees thereby removes more carbon from the atmosphere than it produces.
