Der neue Stern am melodischen Progressive Rock-Himmel nennt sich GHOST OF THE MACHINE.
Er zeigt seine strahlende Stärke bereits im Debüt ´Scissorgames´. Allerdings nicht gänzlich aus heiterem Himmel, schließlich haben fast alle Bandmitglieder schon eine Vergangenheit in der Band THIS WINTER MACHINE vorzuweisen, Gitarrist Graham Garbett, Bassist Stuart McAuley, Schlagzeuger Andy Milner und Gitarrist Scott Owens. In ihrem Kreise fand sich noch Keyboarder Mark Hagan und Sänger Charlie Bramald, der bei der Coverband HARMONY OF SPHERES tätig war, ein.
Der Rest geschah im Handumdrehen. Innerhalb von nur einem Monat hatten sie die Songs, bestehend aus alten und neuen Ideen, für ´Scissorgames´ komplettiert. Unter dem Banner GHOST OF THE MACHINE trafen sie sich erstmals im März 2021 persönlich und packten im Oktober 2021 die Produktion im „The Chairworks“ in Castleford an.
Auf sieben Kompositionen schildern die Briten die Wirrungen und den Wahnsinn des Lebens, zwischen Liebe und Misshandlung. Obwohl sie ihre Einflüsse mit MARILLION, RUSH, GENESIS und DREAM THEATER angeben, sind diese letztlich nicht ausschlaggebend, da sie ihren musikalischen Kosmos im melodischen Progressive Rock finden, der mit Rock-Elementen verfeinert wird. Denn selbst Liebhaber der späten SAVATAGE könnten bei GHOST OF THE MACHINE auf ihre Kosten kommen.
Das Kernstück der Scheibe nennt sich ´Scissors´ und eröffnet das Werk in 17 Minuten und beendet es mit einer ´Reprise´ in 10 Minuten. Zur ausgezeichneten Dynamik in den einzelnen Abschnitten trägt insbesondere der Wechsel zwischen voluminösen Keyboards und einer gewissen Klaviersanftheit durch Keyboarder Mark Hagan bei, die natürlich durch die Rhythmusgruppe in Form von Stuart McAuley und Andy Milner geebnet wird. Die Gitarrenvariationen von Graham Garbett und Scott Owens zwischen elegisch und kraftstrotzend führen zur Vervollkommnung der Stilistik.
Auch das neunminütige ´Mercury Rising (Pt. 1 & Pt. 2)´ ist ein weiteres extrem starkes Neo Prog-Stück. Dagegen beginnt ´Just For Reference´ in aller Milde und auch ´Dead To Me´ profitiert von seinen Etappen mit Klavierbegleitung. Ein ´Mountain´ sticht jedoch aufgrund seiner Leichtigkeit und Zugänglichkeit nochmals heraus.
Über Yorkshire scheint der Stern von GHOST OF THE MACHINE am hellsten, vielleicht bald auf der ganzen Welt.
