A fierce collection of original Americana infused with contemporary blues, southern rock and Georgia Soul. This music will inspire you to get up after you‘ve been knocked down, fight the good fight, and remind you that music is medicine This is one of those albums that comes as a true surprise, a wonderful melange of modern Americana with blues edges, funk and soul all pooled together to deliver an excellent release.
Malone, the writer and singer here, has a strong, powerful voice full of emotion and determination; and the backing lives up to the task, ensuring this to be an album played on repeat often. Despite having never previously come across this artist, on the basis of this offering, Michelle Malone is somebody to keep on the radar, for sure.
At times, Malone comes across as a pretty smart Lucinda Williams – no mean feat to pull-off. At others there’s hints of honey, mellow and melodic, before she again roars off in full-throttle mode with real, riotous passion. Her fretwork is fiery and her voice raucous and deliciously provocative.
This is a lady who knows exactly what she’s doing, driving ahead with a clear musical vision and intent. Malone has been around a long time now out in the USA where she has worked with Steve Earle, Greg Allman and a host of other greats over the decades. Anyone looking for a new, original and striking album could do no better than turn to this one, a ten-track release that sparkles, spangles and grips from the off. An excellent album in pretty much every way.
There are pretentious artists and certainly plenty of blues rockers who sing in such an overwrought way, that they fail to connect. And then there’s the Atlanta-based southern rocker, singer-songwriter Michelle Malone who rings true in equal parts as a guitar slinger and vocalist with the songs to match. On this, her sixteenth album, Slings and Arrows, Malone does justice to the title right away with her stinging slide guitar as she belts out “Just Getting Started.” Indeed, she is, as the album is full of both unrelenting fury and sublime soulful moments, especially when Malone duets deep soul with Shawn Mullins on Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.” The other nine are originals and are among the best writing she’s ever done.
This is an album that is purely smoking as it’s full of raw emotion, upbeat energy, new personal territory, and defiant political statements.
"Equal parts badass guitar slinger and sweet songstress."
"One of the most remarkable voices I’ve ever heard. She’s uniquely able to blow the roof off the place with a loud raucous number, and then to turn right around and whisper a soft song that will break your damn heart.”
Outrageously good. while the vocals and songs on Slings and Arrows are outstanding, the slide guitar work is the real revelation. ”
