Die ehemalige Pink Floyd Coverband aus England veröffentlichte in den letzten Jahren eine 1. Weltkriegs-Trilogie und hat sich mit ihrem fl oydigen Artrock/Neo-Prog viele Freunde gemacht. In den Jahren 2014 - 2019 wurde dann jeweils ein neuer Song zu Weihnachten gratis online gestellt. Diese 6 Songs wurde nun überarbeitet, aufgefrischt und um drei weitere Songs ergänzt. Das sehr zeitgemäße Thema des Kriegs bestimmt weiterhin die Thematik, die Musik knüpft an die bekannten Eckpunkte an und so ist dieses vierte Album ein weiters Highlight in der Banddiskographie

Und weiter geht es mit dem “The-Smiths-Effekt” bei Freedom To Glide, endlich! Bei der Ex-Morrissey-Mannschaft wurde uns ja bisweilen speiübel beim Verfolgen – den herrlich zuckrigen Melodien und schmissigen Rythmen zum Trotz – der meist bitterbösen Texte, ‘Girlfriend In A Coma’ zum Beispiel. Beim F2G-Phänomen verhält es sich ein wenig anders: hier dominiert stets schwelgerisch-melancholischer Wohlklang. Während es inhaltlich um die dunkelsten Kapitel der Menschheit geht: die Sinnlosigkeit und die Gemetzel des Krieges. Und um die Narben, die diese an Menschen und Menschheit hinterlassen.

Und obwohl erneut der Erste Weltkrieg den inhaltlichen Hintergrund für ein F2G-Album liefert (nach dem stimmungsvollen ‘Prologue’ mit ‘Stolen Souls’ beginnend mit den berühmten spontanen Waffenstillstands-Szenen vom ersten Weihnachtstag 1914, wobei übrigens Musik eine entscheidende Rolle spielte), bettet das Londoner Duo dies sehr wohl in unser aller plötzlich wieder vom Krieg geprägten Gegenwart ein – das Monster Krieg ist wieder ganz nah gerückt. Und plötzlich nicht mehr nur ein Thema für die allerletzten Beiträge in den Spätnachrichten – wenn er nur weit genug entfernt von uns tobt. Oder nur ein Thema für den Geschichtsunterricht:

Ansonsten alles beim Alten – und das ist auch gut so. Andy Nixons Stimme, sein gelegentlich Gilmoureskes Solieren (‘Seize The Day’) und Pete Rileys Spiel auf Flügel, Rhodes, Orgel und Synthesizer sind weiterhin schlicht eine Wohltat. Wie auch die Melodien, die teils so traurig sind, dass es schon fast wieder erhebend wirkt. Das ist bei den behandelten Thematiken aber auch bitter nötig (‘The War Cannot Be Won’). Our fourth album release “The Chronicle Of Stolen Souls” has actually replaced this year’s intended album release due to the unfolding world events of 2022, not least the war in Ukraine. The current political language is reminiscent of what we thought to be a bygone era of power politics and serves as a frightening reminder of the worst situations of the last century. We can only hope for peace, not a peace that is forced upon the loser but a peace without victory.

“The Chronicle Of Stolen Souls” is the culmination of a project spanning across the years 2014 to 2019. Each year a track was written, recorded, produced and released within the week leading up to Christmas Day and released FREE to fans as a “work in progress” for a limited period.

The concept was to honour the memory of the exact week in time a century ago and underline the ever-present futility of war. These new demo tracks served as an insight to the creative process of Freedom To Glide, the intention being to eventually rework, develop and extend the tracks further to produce a new album presenting the entire collection of songs like a completed chronicle complete with Prologue and Epilogue.

We didn’t think for a minute there would be an “appropriate” time to release it but, for better or worse, here we are. “The Chronicle Of Stolen Souls” begins with ‘Prologue’ and concludes with ‘Epilogue’ and ‘This Is How It Ends’, new and unreleased tracks. We began this epic journey in 2014 with the track “Stolen Souls” which centred on the first Christmas Day of WW1, 1914, and the now famous Christmas Truce were soldiers laid down their arms in a spontaneous defiance of war. From that point we followed the same process at the same time each year concluding in 2019 with “Silent Land” covering the 1919 aftermath of the so-called ‘war to end all wars’.

All songs have been reworked, developed and extend.
