Großartige Retroprog-Alben sind dieses Jahr schon erschienen: Von Cabinets of Curiosity etwa oder von Cheeto's Magazine. Jetzt legen die ausgewiesenen Retroprogger Magic Pie ihr fünftes Album vor, und es ist zu erwarten, dass sie damit zu den genannten mindestens aufschließen können.

Aber hallo.

Magic Pie legen mit "Fragments of the 5th Element" mal eben ihr bestes Album vor. Yep, das Album überstrahlt sogar "Motions Of Desire", das viele für ihren bis dato größten Streich halten. Ein ganz starkes Retroprogalbum.

Der Retroprog lebt also noch - anders als uns der derzeitige Progjournalismus glauben machen mag, dessen Fokus immer noch zu sehr auf den New Artrock beschränkt ist. Und Magic Pie melden sich zu Recht als Protagonisten dieses Genres zurück.

Mit den beiden schon vorab bekannten "The Man Who Had it All" und "P&C" startet das Album ganz stark, Retroprog mit einer ziemlich selbstsicheren AOR-Attitüde - wie man das etwa von Spock's Beard oder Kansas kennt. Und weil das Ganze mit großer Spielfreude gemacht ist, die wiederum große Hörfreude auslöst, ist es nicht wenig gerechtfertigt, hier eine Nähe zu den Spaßproggern Cheeto's Magazine zu hören.

Mit "Table For Two" wird dann der Hochenergie-Progfaktor ein wenig zurückgeschraubt. Magic Pie liefern einen etwas straighteren Rocker mit balladesken Einschüben ab, der dazu mit schönen Vintage-Sounds aufwartet.

Es folgt "Touched by an Angel", die einzige Ballade auf dem Album. Mir im Ganzen ein wenig zu schmalzig, allerdings trägt Kim Stenbergs geschmackvolles Gitarrenspiel dazu bei, das Stück nicht kippen zu lassen. Und wer sich bisher schon immer mal unwillkürlich an David Bowie erinnert fühlte, der kann hier nun einer unverhüllten Hommage an den großen Sänger lauschen.

Das Album schließt mit dem großartigen Longtrack "The Hedonist". Symphoprog vom Feinsten, und endlich mal wieder ein Longtrack, der als solcher auch funktioniert, und nicht bloß aus vorgefertigten Versatzstücken zusammengenagelt wurde. Um ein Klischee zu bemühen: Eine musikalische Achterbahnfahrt - allerdings stimmt's diesmal. "The Hedonist" ist ein Track, wie man ihn sich in den letzten Jahren von so vielen bekannteren Retroprogbands gewünscht hätte. Yep, ich schließe Spock's Beard und die Flower Kings mit ein.

Alles in allem ist "Fragments of the 5th Element" eine fantastische Scheibe, die es verdient hätte, die Sensation des Spätsommers zu werden. Allerdings veröffentlichen derzeit in kurzer Folge Tool, Opeth, Bent Knee, Leprous und die Flower Kings - und bei solch illustrer Konkurrenz dürften es Magic Pie schwer haben, durchzudringen. Hoffen wir, dass sie es dennoch schaffen. Es wäre schade.

The long-awaited fifth full-length album from Norwegian Prog Rockers MAGIC PIE is on its way. Titled "Fragments of the 5th Element" it is set to hit the streets on Karisma Records on the 30th of August in CD and Gatefold LP.

 

"Fragments of the 5th Element" finds MAGIC PIE steering clear of the sterile perfection so often found amongst modern Prog bands in order to create an album with a slightly more unpolished sound, and a "rough around the edges" feel that gives it an added bite. From the genre-defying opener, to the epic 23 minute closer, MAGIC PIE clearly demonstrate just why they have become a household name amongst Prog Rock fans, and why this album has been worth the long wait. Mixed & Mastered by Rich Mouser (SPOCKS BEARD, TRANSATLANTIC) at The Mouse House Studio in Los Angeles, drums for "Fragments of the 5th Element" were recorded at Lionheart Studio & Production, where Øyvind Voldmo Larsen also worked his magic as engineer. All other recordings were made at Kim Stenberg‘s Studio Basement.

On this record, they have tried to steer clear of the sterile perfection which modern prog bands have a tendency to get caught up in – and have gone for a slightly more unpolished sound, a bit rough in the edges. A little more ‘bite’.”


Norwegian progressive rock band Magic Pie has become a household name for prog fans around the world with their blend of classic prog and 70’s hard rock inspired by bands such as Dream Theater, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Deep Purple, Yes, etc. Fronted by band leader and guitar maestro Kim Stenberg, the band are known for their epic, energetic, melodic and sometimes heavy prog rock with splendid vocal harmonies and great musicianship.


Right, that’s the PR and introduction out of the way, what you fans really want to know is what is this new album like?

I’ve been a big fan of Magic Pie since I first heard their wonderful 2011 release The Suffering Joy, the incredibly infectious blend upbeat pop infused progressive rock is energetic, melodic and full of splendid vocal harmonies and great musicianship. Well folks, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it seems to be the mantra that this Norwegian sextet have decided to follow and, in my books, that’s the correct decision. The thunderously bombastic opener “The Man Who Had It All” is electrifying and grin-inducing in equal measure. Sonorous, powerful guitars, thumping bass and dynamic drums combine with stylish keyboards and the highly distinctive vocals to deliver a massively enjoyable, rollicking musical ride that leaves you trying to catch your breath. As album openers go, it doesn’t get much more vibrant and energetic than this, now bring on the rest! Edgy and frenetic to start with, “P&C” seems to be brimming with a potent intensity and never seems to stand still. The upbeat, memorable chorus provides a counterpoint but this song is the musical equivalent of popping a champagne cork and builds on the high intensity of the opening track. Completing the triumvirate of bluster and braggadocio with some vivid and potent guitars and in your face keyboards is the criminally short “Table For Two”. Another standout chorus adds meat to the bones of an already impressive track and these stellar musicians continue to blow you away with their vitality and power. Bringing a modicum of calm and reflection to proceedings is the gorgeous rock ballad “Touched By An Angel”, tender vocals and a restrained touch to the music deliver a beautiful song that erupts with emotion on the stirring, compelling chorus with its delightful harmonies. Eight minutes of elegant hard rock with a little touch of prog as Magic Pie continue to impress with their musical chops, the guitar solo is just brilliant! Let’s ramp the prog up to 10 shall we? Album closer “The Hedonist” is over twenty-three minutes long and not a second is wasted with filler, it’s a phenomenal musical journey full of twists and turns, one where the band get to indulge and enjoy themselves. The mind-blowing instrumental introduction leaves you in a state of rapture on its own, these guys are most certainly at the top of their game. Hard edged and aggressive lyrics give you a metaphorical shove in the chest as this track makes its presence known. The perfectly harmonized, sparkling chorus is electrifying and just adds to the cornucopia of amazing musical delights on show. Moments of calm intersperse the energy and add pathos to this singular tune, a song almost worth the entry fee on its own.


Fragments Of The 5th Element is Magic Pie at their electrifying best, catchy keyboards, incredibly vibrant guitars a rhythm section hewn out of mountains and harmonized vocals to die for give the foundations for the band to create and deliver an album of monumental delights.
