Er hat es wieder getan. Nachdem völlig überraschend im letzten Jahr sein erstes Solowerk mit dem Titel“Suite Cryptique – Recomposing Twelfth Night“ erschien, legt Clive Mitten gleich mit dem nächsten Doppelalbum nach. Zwar geht es auch hier wieder um überarbeitete Versionen, aber diesmal dreht es sich nicht mehr um seine Hausband Twelfth Night, sondern er wagt sich ausschließlich an alte Klassiker, und das kann natürlich bei solch einem Ein-Mann-Projekt ordentlich in die Hose gehen. Tut es aber nicht.
Man wird mit den Dinosauriern der 70er konfrontiert, mit denen sich der Künstler hier auseinander setzt und die er offenbar schon seit frühester (misspent) Jugend verfolgt. Einer von vielen Pluspunkten dieses Albums sind die Covergestaltung und die sehr ausführlichen Liner Notes, die absolutes Lesevergnügen bereiten. Denn sie sind von einem sehr typischen Humor geprägt. Das Bild eines Gitarre spielenden jungen Musikers sollte allerdings nicht falsche Erwartungen schüren, denn der Bassist und Multiinstrumentalist Mitten hat hier ausschließlich mit Keyboards und Samples gearbeitet.
Und wie er hier die unterschiedlichsten Songs orchestriert hat, ist bemerkenswert. Was leicht ins Peinliche oder Kitschige abrutschen kann, ist hier durchweg toll gelungen und eine Freude für jeden Fan, der sich die unten aufgeführten Prog-Hits auch in reinem Keyboard-Umfeld vorstellen kann. Das bedeutet natürlich, dass der Gesang, den man sich bei manchen Songs dann im Geiste vorstellt, auch hier von den Keyboards übernommen wird.
Der Protagonist führt sehr detailliert zu den einzelnen Songs auf, wie er dies umgesetzt hat, und alleine vom Lesen her mag bei dem einen oder anderen das Interesse geweckt sein. Wer es aber unbedingt mit Rock-Gitarren etc. haben muss, liegt dann hier allerdings ganz offensichtlich falsch.
Was bzw. wer ist also nun zu hören? Neben radiokompatiblen Hits auch Longtrack-Klassiker, die dann auch mit den entsprechenden Laufzeiten umgesetzt wurden. Im einzelnen sind dies:

Ob jetzt ein Magnum Opus wie ‘Supper’s ready’ oder ein kurzes Stück wie das wunderbar mit Vibraphon-ähnlichem Sound umgesetzte ‘Living in the past’, Clive Mitten versteht es, die anspruchsvollen Titel variantenreich und farbenfroh in Szene zu setzen. Seine Jugend und die Prog-Szene betreffend war Clive also mittendrin, statt nur dabei. Da kann man in Anlehnung an den Albumtitel nur sagen, man kann seine Jugend mit deutlich schlimmeren Dingen vergeuden. Und da es sich beim vorliegenden Album um Teil 1 handelt, darf für die Zukunft ein weiteres Doppelalbum erwartet werden, dann vermutlich mit Titeln von Yes, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator. Here comes Clive Mitten’s (Twelfth Night) second solo album Tales From A Misspent Youth: Volume 1.
This latest project sees Clive covering, in a fully orchestral style, some of progressive rock’s greatest tracks; ones that inspired him as teenager, to create something entirely new. The double album includes the work of some of the best-known artists and some of their best-loved songs, beautifully interpreted, in what we hope will be a series of releases. This first volume inc. tracks by Pink Floyd, Genesis, Rush, Peter Gabriel, Jethro Tull, Mike Oldfield, and Supertramp!

It is being released as a double CD and, as you can see, it runs to just over two hours over the two discs. It will be accompanied by a booklet containing comprehensive sleeve notes written by Clive explaining the concept of the album, and giving detailed information about the tracks.
Here’s what Clive is saying about the album… “14 months in the making, this album is my tribute to those who inspired me in my teens to become a musician. I could already play the piano and classical guitar, but aged 12 I encountered ‘prog for the first time. I saw Pink Floyd play ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ live, and witnessed Supertramp perform ‘Crime of the Century’ before most knew who they were - all while wearing a great coat and carrying a crate of Newcastle Brown with me. These experiences and others led me to electrify my playing to work out what my heroes were doing. Now, 50 years later, I am paying my dues to them in my current style, which you can loosely define as cinematically orchestral but with an in-depth understanding of prog. Why take this on? The originals are complex works which are fiendishly difficult in places and already well-loved. Lockdowns are part of it, but the main reason is that I feel I can shine a new light on the material - and in places it is an unexpected light. This album has been a labour of love, both for the people who drove me to write music in the first place and led me ultimately to being able to call myself a composer, and, as always, for the music.”
